About RHAMC

Respiratory Health Association Mission

The mission of Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago is to promote healthy lungs and fight lung disease through research, advocacy and education.  To that end and through community-based interventions, Respiratory Health Association serves an estimated 1 million Cook County residents living with asthma, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema and other lung diseases.

Respiratory Health Association was founded more than a century ago in 1906.  In an effort to control the spread of the nations leading killer at the time, Dr. Theadore Sachs and nurse Harriet Fulmer formed the Chicago Tuberculosis Institute.

How Your Support Helps the RHAMC Mission

The Team raises awareness and monies to further our mission to promote healthy lungs and fight lung disease throughout Illinois.  More specifically our work focus is:

  • Asthma: We provide asthma education programs for students, staff, parents and community members.
  • COPD: We organize educational and social events for people living with COPD.
  • Lung Cancer: We fund lung cancer research to understand the causes of lung cancer and to improve early detection and treatment.
  • Quit Smoking: We provide programs & resources to help individuals quit smoking and live smoke-free lives.
  • Flu: We educate the public about seasonal flu and novel flu strains such as H1N1 and the importance of getting vaccinated.
  • Women & Lung Health: We educate the public and medical professionals about the disproportionate effects of lung disease in women.
